Normal window or “float” glass is manufactured by a rigorously controlled process which enables silica sand with stabilizing additives in liquid state to be “floated” over the surface of molten tin then cooled to room temperature.

This process maintains consistent flatness, thickness and optical purity, however should the glass break it will by nature result in large sharp splinters or shards which can be hard to see and extremely dangerous to people or animals. Strict standards ensure fitness for application and determine where float or safety glass must be used.
Increasingly, legislation enforces the use of safety glass for strength and durability with two options readily available; toughened or laminated and in some very specific applications laminated-toughened.Overall there are plusses and minuses for either toughened or laminated glass, however we can advise you as to the best selection for your application and the necessary code compliance. Either way, safety glass by definition is specifically designed to ensure that there are no sharp shards to injure people or pets and the glass drops in to pellets. At Glasstech we specialize in safety glass!
